Protecting Our Environment

Every day, millions of Californians demonstrate their commitment to our world's environmental future. California is leading by example on energy efficiency and conservation, sustainability, green building and green purchasing practices. As Attorney General, I will work side by side with state environmental officials and California residents to protect California's environment for the long term.

Part of my job as Attorney General will be enforcing existing laws, ensuring public health, and defending California's beautiful natural environment. Enhancing and enforcing tough environmental standards, preserving natural resources, and protecting against illegal dumping of toxic materials and offshore oil drilling are some of the important issues I will undertake as Attorney General to sustain a healthier environment in which to work, live and enjoy.

Californians are fortunate to have an abundance of natural resources. Every state agency, every company and every citizen in California should be looking at ways to protect the environment. My Silicon Valley home, for example, is looking at a renaissance as a capital for green technology, and building a new economy around these green jobs.

But there are some in the world whose attitude and culture believes that environmental degradation is tolerable if it results in enough economic growth. This view is shortsighted. California's economic success will depend heavily on our ability to nurture industries that create green initiatives including, low-emission or zero-emission vehicles, and other non-polluting equipment. My office will make it abundantly clear that we intend to enforce environmental regulations forcefully and without exception. We must continue to invest in conservation and efficiency measures to ensure that environmental restoration and green technology are seen as opportunities not only for economic growth but also for a sustainable and healthy environment for all Californians.
