As recent history has shown us, it takes extraordinary coordination and cooperation involving state, national, and international agencies to track and capture people who seek to harm children through the Internet. The Internet allows predators to coordinate across state and national boundaries, and my office would be dedicated to becoming the most effective cybercrime fighting force in the world, working with other state, federal, and international authorities to tackle these issues.
Because parents and their children are on the frontline in the battle against Internet predators, they need the active support and assistance of law enforcement. Informative campaigns that encourage parents to monitor their children's Internet usage must be a priority. As Attorney General, I will work with leaders in Internet safety to produce and promote educational programming and tutorials, through the Attorney General office's website and also at schools and public events, so that children and parents can learn responsible techniques for using the Internet.
We need to engage children in the classroom, in the home, and at public events to ensure that the message about Internet safety is sinking in. Engagement is the key. By openly discussing the issue in the public square, we do more to educate the public and protect children.
While at Facebook, I have spent the last four years working with Attorneys General in all 50 states to proactively make the Internet a safer place for children and consumers. I look forward to continuing this work on Internet safeguards that allow for people of all ages to have a safe online experience when I am Attorney General of California.
